Final Project: Self-Titled

INSTRUCTIONS
In your final task, you will bring together the knowledge and skills acquired from three different modules: Typography, Illustration & Visual Narrative, and Digital Imaging & Photography. Your goal is to create an integrated poster that showcases your abilities in each of these areas. You will use a custom font you've created (Typo), incorporate a self-portrait (DIP), and weave a related motive (IVN) through the font and image, resulting in a visually compelling and conceptually rich poster. Typography; Illustration & Visual Narrative; and Digital Imaging & Photography.

You will use the font created (Typo) in a poster that features your self-portrait (DIP), and you will weave a related motive (IVN) through the font and image.

The end result is an integrated poster

PROCESS WORK

1. IDEA DEVELOPMENT

Biography
My name is Marsya. I turned 22 in April. I’m taking Bachelor of Designs (HONS) in Creative Media. I used to be in Bachelor of Information Technology (HONS) but I switched courses because I realised my interests lined up more with my current course. I enjoy the work I get to do here because I have the freedom to use my creativity and the skills I learn within the course is applicable with what I already do, which is designing, videography and editing. I find this a great way to broaden my knowledge.

My passion is music. I enjoy being surrounded by music in general. It includes being involved in the local music industry, I try to get myself involved as much as possible. I currently play drums in a band, even when I’m not performing I’m a part of the stage crew to help bands set up their equipment for performances and during my free time I’ll be at a local concert/gig or I’ll take jobs that includes production for bands.

2. DESIGN
My self-portrait highlights the idea of me being the flower that blooms around nature in reference to my autobiography.

Figure 2.1: Self-Portrait

To start off my illustration, I began with the main aspects of my design. I added a textured background and cut out my self portrait using the object selection tool. Then, I included an outline of my portrait and illustrated a field of flowers using the pen tool, I used the flowers on my face as reference.

In Typography, our project was to create a font using Typography theories. We then illustrated our fonts on Adobe Illustrator and imported it through FontLab. This is my final font creation to incorporate onto my poster:

After adding the font, I used the free form tool to wrap the letters onto my portrait, making it look like an outline. I added a brush stroke along the words to emphasise the quote I typed out.

Figure 2.4: Adding Tex and Elements

I wanted to add more nature elements and I felt like the colour blue would suit the overall aesthetic. The picture was taken nearby a river so I decided to add water to my design.

Figure 2.5: Adding Water

Because of the title being 'Shining Light in The Night', I realised there weren't any night elements to my design and the colours did not really portray the night. Therefore, I added the moon, the stars and a few scribbles to highlight the time of day. I also added a few textures to the water.

3. ANIMATION
For the animation process, I wanted there to be effects on the word 'light', where it looks like it's glowing and flashing. I also wanted to add effects to the stars and scribbles where the scribbles are increasing in size and the stars are flashing. For additional effects, I felt like the water should be moving as well.

I began creating the frames on Adobe Illustrator. I figured I would work with lesser frames because the loop would make the most sense in this case.

Figure 3.1: Frames

After creating my frames, I imported it on Adobe Photoshop and created my GIF through the Timeline feature. I noticed the frames were running faster than I expected so I added a 1 second delay where it looks like the word 'light' is fading and a 0.5 delay where the word 'light' is flashing.
