Project 1: Proposal

1. INSTRUCTIONS
The theme is 'Cultural Sensitivity in Design'. Study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture that is perceived as 'sensitive'. Convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts. Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express your interpretation in design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale.

2. PROCESS WORK

Ideation
I decided to propose the idea of the local music industry being culturally sensitive to my group. Mainly because I have been in the industry for a few years and there could be varieties of design proposals we could come up with to raise awareness on the cultural sensitivity in the local music industry. There is a great variety of genres in Malaysia music that reflects cultural groups in the society such as Malay, Chinese, Indian and others. The overall aim for this theme is to consider interculturalism and understand the integration of Malaysian culture in the local music industry and at the same time keep in mind that it is important for musicians to do thorough research on the subcultures in Malaysia to avoid any backfires or offend any culture.

Sketch
For this stage, my group mates and I each did a sketch supported by a rationale to share our ideas. At the end of the day, we would choose the best ones by vote. This is the sketch I proposed to my team:

Rationale
The main concept for this idea is to design a music event poster that highlights the music culture in Malaysia. Malaysia being a multicultural society filled with many traditions and artistic expressions, this is a way to harmoniously blend the cultural diversity through the universal language of music. The event line up consists of local musicians that incorporate traditional instruments into modern music. In terms of the design, the colour palette would include warm tones inspired by traditional textiles and patterns such as batik patterns, or murals. It would also have illustrations of traditional instruments and local landscapes to create a sense of cultural context. Not only will the poster promote local music, it is a visual celebration of Malaysian culture through the integration of traditional aesthetics and musical symbols. The aim is to create a sense of pride and unity among the audience while inviting them to enjoy the beauty of Malaysian music.

Visual Reference
To find ideas for my sketch, I looked through local event pages known for organising events that integrates culturalism in Malaysia into their modern ideas. They mainly host music events and markets that highlights the local cultures. Finding inspiration from them also taught me their colour palettes and art style are somewhat similar.
