A) PART 1: INFOGRAPHIC POSTER

References
I went on Pinterest to scope through infographic posters to settle on 1 that I would use as a reference for this project. After consulting with Mr. Shamsul, he liked the poster I presented about the Timeline of Music Storage.

Pinterest Board: https://pin.it/olCiByvBG

  • Fonts are simple: Makes the poster not as appealing
  • Colors: Too many bright colors are used, lacking in contrast
  • Visual elements: Does not accommodate to the overall aesthetic
  • Information: Too much text, could be summarized
Mood Board
Mr. Shamsul mentioned the mood board is to capture the overall aesthetic of the infographic. I explored the different art styles on Pinterest and decided to go with this concept because I find the colors intriguing and the overall concept represents the idea of music well:

Colors and Typography
I wanted the palette to be colorful, like my mood board from Pinterest. I intend to incorporate these colors into my infographic. As for the fonts, I have chosen typefaces that would blend in with the vibe I am going for. The hierarchy of the typefaces is yet to be decided.

Sketches
These are the ideas I have come up with for the layout and composition of my infographic:
  • Sketch #1 - The circle represents a CD with the timeline radiating around it.
  • Sketch #2 - An audio cable being plugged into an audio interface. The cable flow will determine the timeline of music storage.
  • Sketch #3 - Similar to Sketch #1, the circle is a CD. Except it radiates outwards instead of inwards and the center point is the middle of the canvas.
  • Sketch #4 - A stacked concept.
  • Sketch #5 - A timeline that goes from left to right. The pictures in the middle will be a composition of music storage.
  • Sketch #6 - A common timeline layout. Visuals need to be enhanced, therefore the middle of the timeline will be a string of audio cables and the top of the page will include pictures of the type of music storage as a composition.

Updated Mood Board, Colors & Typography
After receiving feedback, Mr. Shamsul suggested going for a retro aesthetic. This is the retro look I intend to use along with a new color palette and typeface:

Illustration
This is my first draft, I went with Sketch #2 because I like the idea of having cables connected to an audio interface that acts as a pathway for the timeline, I also incorporated audio waveforms in the background.

In the original reference, I felt as though the large body of texts made it too complicated, I extracted important information and summarized them instead to make it easier to understand.

For my second draft, I incorporated Sketch #5. Mr. Shamsul mentioned the retro concept not being visible for my first design, I went on Pinterest and explored retro posters for inspiration. I also decided to use a thicker typeface to match the overall aesthetic.

B) PART 2: MINIMAL ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC
Before exporting the poster from Illustrator, I ensured all the layers were organized for my animation process. Then, all the elements were arranged and placed into After Effects.

Animation
1)  Background Animation: I masked the background so that it would appear smoothly onto the canvas, starting with the upper layer then the bottom.

2)  Main Visuals: The graphical elements appear subsequently after the background animation ends

FEEDBACK

WEEK 4 - 27/02/2025
Try switching to a retro vibe instead of a contemporary. This means possibly changing the color palette and the typography. Use different types in the same font-family for text.

WEEK 5 - 06/03/2025
The design is not very visually appealing. Concept is not very strong. The retro concept is not visible. Construction of the graphical element can be improved. Poor choice of typeface. A box is not required for text.

REFLECTION
This project helped me understand how to simplify information while keeping the design visually engaging. At first, I struggled with making the infographic look appealing, but after receiving feedback, I refined the colors, typography, and layout to better fit the concept I intended. The animation process in After Effects was a challenge, especially in organizing the layers for a smooth flow, but it became easier with proper planning. Through multiple revisions, I learned the importance of visual hierarchy and how small adjustments can make a big difference. Overall, this project improved my design thinking and my ability to present information in a clear and engaging way.
