FINAL PROJECT: STOP MOTION

STOP MOTION SHORTS (22/04/2024)
Share 3 favourite short motion shorts and explain the reasons of it being chosen.

Negative Space by Ru Kuwahata & Max Porter

The reason I chose 'Negative Space' is because I find the storyline, the art style and the detail of each scene extremely impressive. It incorporates playful imaginative ideas whilst still keeping a dark atmosphere throughout. The puppets were sculpted out of air-dry clay, personally I enjoy stop motion out of clay, because the process work and the effort put behind it  and the overall aesthetic intrigues me. The setting was consistent throughout and I find the transitions delightful. The directors mentioned that during the editing process most of the frames were put out, I felt the amount of frames in the finalised version was thought out well because it gives the story the right amount of emotional depth.

Good Intentions by Anna Mantzaris

Another favourite stop motion short is 'Good Intentions', I like this mainly because of the aesthetic overall, the lighting and the setting is something I would generally watch for the sake of enjoying the cinematography despite disliking horror, which is the creative direction I believe Anna was going for. This animation is dialogue free, but each scene has a purpose and gives out a clear storyline to the viewers. The imperfect puppets gives a sense of 'brokenness' to the film, implying that guilt eats you up and can eventually break you.

The House (2022) Film

I am not sure if this applies to the task because it is a movie but I cannot help but to include this because it is my favourite film and I have been telling everyone to watch this. Everything about this movie is interesting, it splits up three different stories about 3 different houses. First one was eerie, second was traumatising and the third was cathartic. They were memorable in their own way and had different emotional impacts on me. It feels like a metaphor for letting go of things that cannot be fixed. The directors went with diversity for the puppets, incorporating animals as main characters including bugs and rodents. This movie was just a beautiful experience. The scenery fit the idea of the movie being 'dark'' and the directors emphasized symbolism in a creative way. The directors portrayed the 'intensity' well.

Content
Before staring my editing process on Adobe Premiere, I needed to prepare content to incorporate into my short film. I started with designing the main title and 'the end' of the film, mainly because I wanted to personalise the typeface to fit the aesthetics of the film:

For the sound effects, I used freesound.org to find audio clips that were relevant to the scenes. I then compiled them into a file.

Editing Process
On Adobe Premiere, I set the sequence settings based on the requirements provided on the Module Information Booklet (MIB).

Figure 1.6: Sequence Settings

The editing process started with compiling the images I took during shooting. I then established the duration of each frame whilst adding the voice clips that were recorded. I have used 5 tracks in total for audio:
  • A1: Ambience
  • A2: Sound Effects
  • A3: Sound Effects
  • A4: Voice for Nutty
  • A5: Voice for Pickles & Mysterious Driver
  • A6: Voice for Fluffy & Ticket Person

Some frames had to be longer than other frames due to the length of the dialogue. I tried to make it suit the duration of the dialogue so that the character's body language matches their lines.
