Experience
I have learned a lot about the concepts of Illustration and Visual Narrative throughout this semester. My expectations going into this subject felt overwhelming mainly because I had no experience in using Adobe Illustrator. But through tutorials, practicals and lectures, I managed to get a good grasp at the idea of illustrating. For our Task 1 exercise, I had to design a Pokemon character based on the shapes that were provided. I traced out the shapes on Adobe Illustrator and got to experiment with creating my Pokemon. At first, I was not satisfied with how it looked but after learning about textures and applying it to my character, it started to make more sense. Then came the hardest assignment for me, illustrating an urban local legend and creating an animation. I had an idea of the main subjects for my poster, but I realised it looked too empty after illustrating most of it. I also had trouble finding the right colour scheme, because most colour palettes I tested out did not come out as nice as I thought it would. Creating the animation took awhile because consistency is important so I had to ensure my frames were smooth and that the movements were not glitchy. It was difficult to decide which elements of my poster to animate. Next, our assignment was to come up with a digital triptych through Scott McCloud's transitions. This was my favourite assignment because I enjoy going to locals gigs and I had the idea to incorporate one into my comic strip, deciding on the transitions came almost instantly. For our final project, I had to incorporate my self-portrait from Digital Photography and my font creation from Typography. Those aspects were done beforehand but when it came to illustrating I had to draft up a few designs because I wanted a layout that portrayed myself best.
Observation
Based on my observations, when it came to creating my Pokemon character, it was best to incorporate textures and shades to enhance the art style of the game itself. For my urban local legend, because there were many elements to the poster, layers were very important. It helps me keep track of each element and it was easier to make changes later on. The animation process needed to be smooth, so having more frames made sense because I could just remove the parts with any inconsistencies. For my digital triptych, understanding Scott McCloud's transitions helped a lot. It gave me a clear idea on how to construct my panels and what to illustrate. Lastly incorporating all 3 modules into my final project added a lot to my poster. I have realised that there are no limitations to design and all designers need a good understanding of different aspects in Creative Media.
Finding
I find that there are no limits to the amount of drafts and sketches I create because it is best to see what works and what does not. It gives me a better understanding for future work. I also find that keeping your work organised as possible helps with illustrating because it is easier to find certain elements if I were to make any changes. Choosing a colour scheme that blends in well is also very important because this determines the overall aesthetic for my posters, which is why a mood board should be done beforehand. Through my final project, I found way to incorporate 3 different modules into one, giving me a better grasp at the modules I have taken this semester.
